PROTECTION AND PROMOTION OF THE RIGHTS AND WELFARE OF CHILDREN AT STAKE
Fellow Sierra Leoneans, my heart bleeds as I write this piece to see someone trying to twist the truth on the issue with children. As I sated before unequivocally clear, I continue to dissociate myself completely from the unfortunate incident that took place at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs on 28th December 2016. It is no hidden secret that thugs were hired by the Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs whom she claimed were her friends to manhandle the children and even went to the extent molesting a senior staff of the Ministry.
As an activist prior to my appointment and a politician now serving as Deputy Minister of the same Ministry, I owe it to the Children of this nation and the country as a whole to let the truth be known. I will continue to dissociate myself from all the stage managed activities by the Minister to cover up the true story. I therefore call on the Sierra Leone Police to continue their investigation as this is fundamental to protect the legacy made by our Government on promoting and protecting the rights and welfare of children as enshrined in International, Regional and National instruments. The incident on the 28th December 2016 is a test on State apparatus on their commitment to the children of this nation.
The Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs in the last nine (9) months has committed a lot of abuse of power and office more than any other Ministry in recent times of our country’s history. Let’s search our consciences as we address issue of the children who were beaten up and molested. This manipulative tendency to divide the children organizations must stop.
Our legacy as a Government in seeking the welfare of children is at stake. I am therefore calling on all authorities concern to ACT NOW. Justice delayed is justice denied.
Rugiatu Neneh Turay
