By Melvin Tejan-Mansaray
The presidential ambition of the Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament of Sierra Leone has been dashed as a result of illness.
Sources close to Hon. Ansu Kaikai revealed that due to sever ailment and subsequent traveling for treatment abroad, the Member of Parliament (MP’s) aspiration to be one of the flag bearer contenders for the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has been derailed.
The MP is quoted as saying that for the fact that he went away for close to eight months on medical treatment and he is still unwell, has seriously dented his chances and opportunity to vie for the enviable position of flag bearer for the only opposition party in Parliament.
Hon. Kaikai is renowned to be a sober-minded opposition MP who always puts the ruling APC on its toes on procedural, political, social and other issues of national interest.
He had made his presidential ambition public and has been addressed by the nomenclature ‘Flag Bearer’ far ahead of the race.
Early this week, the MP was partly active in the Sub Appropriation Committee hearings where as usual, he critically probed along with other colleagues, the financial estimates of MDAs for the 2017 fiscal year.
Apparently, the exiting of Hon. Kaikai from the race of SLPP flag bearer may have come as a disappointment to him and his ardent supporters but not his fellow aspirants who are numerous and some of whom are desperate to win at all cost.
According to an SLPP observer, the fact that a formidable contender like Hon. Kaikai has bowed out of the race for the symbol for presidency in the party, makes the race a head-on one and a two-tier battle between Maada Bio and Dr. Kandeh Yumkella.
However, Hon. Kaikai in a chat told interested supporters that he had always wished to be the winner describing himself as the most experienced.
He nevertheless iterated that his supporters can throw their support to any of the aspirants but stressed that the party must be more united if it is to grab the opportunity of ousting the ruling APC party that is losing public sympathy on the hour due to extreme economic hardship in the country.
