After a thorough lobbying and advocacy by the Honorable Minister of Labor and Social Security, together with the Honorable Minister of Information and Communications, His Excellency, the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, has lifted the ban on overseas employment.
This information was revealed at an emergency meeting summoned at the Miatta Conference Hall on Wednesday 30th November 2016 by both advocates of the removal of this ban. According to the Honorable Minister of Labor and Social Security, Hon. Dr. Mathew Teambo, “The Government of Sierra Leone is a listening government and therefore has been listening to the cries for the removal of this ban on overseas employment.” Dr. Teambo explained his ordeal as ‘migrant worker’ whilst on overseas course and expressed that it takes courage and strength for one to undertake such venture.
Dr. Teambo added that the President have seen it fit to give a temporal lift on the ban because of the recent disaster in Libya where some Sierra Leoneans have been taking the venture to seek greener pasture and ended up losing their lives, and that the program OEIA have been rendering to people of Sierra Leone has been safe over the years as they don’t have to go through desert or sea.
The Honorable Minister, Dr. Teambo informed all and sundry at the meeting to be rest assured that H.E. Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has given his permission for applicants who have job orders that are on the verge to expire, to go ahead with their necessary arrangements before expiration. He further mentioned that a final removal of the ban will be discussed in the subsequent cabinet session. Dr. Teambo therefore cautioned those that will be leaving the shores to be very professional in executing their tasks, and advised on transparency in the recruitment process.
Representatives from various associations involved in this overseas employment program admonished their colleagues on discipline and integrity, extortion from applicants, and the transparency of the process. They further applauded the efforts of the Government of Sierra Leone in considering their plight as unemployed youths and commended the Beowulf Worldwide SL Ltd for their mass recruitment for overseas employment.
“We appreciate the efforts of these two Honorable Ministers and the Government of Sierra Leone for considering our plights and probing into our situation. But inasmuch as much is given to us, so it is expected of us also. We’ll therefore play the role of ‘attack dogs’ rather than ‘watch dogs’ in clamping down any recruiter or employer involved in extortion or recruitment malpractice, as this will not only deter our program but will also embarrass the two Honorable Ministers who have placed their necks at stake for us”, says Alusine M D Sesay, Acting Public Relations Officer – Sierra Leone Organization of Recruiting Agencies.
The Minister of information and Communications, Mr. Bangura advised the organization to be genuine in the process as it is meant for Sierra Leoneans and not any political party. They should give opportunity to whomsoever is capable of doing the job and try not to extort from people.
Abdulai Bangura who is an applicant and also a worker of BEOWULF worldwide expressed his gratitude to the Ministers and President of the country because they have given them the opportunity to work and earn salary which will take care of their needs. But also advised his fellow workers to abide by rules, norms, culture and regulation of their agencies and the country they will be going to.
