Residents of Makeni City woke up to the sad news of how mysterious fire gutted the building housing the Catholic Holy Spirit hospital’s Molecular biology, Immunology and virology lab, the drug store and the physiotherapy department in the early hours this morning.
Fire fighters from the city’s fire department raced to the scene to put off the ragging fire at the said building which they succeeded to do but not enough to save a single asset from the gutted building.
Patients admitted in the hospital were seen fleeing to the hospital neighborhood to save their lives, whilst those who could not walk were assisted by nurses and neighbors to safety.
The cause of the inferno remains unclear but nurses on duty said the fire started in the Molecular biology lab following unstable power supply by EDDA.
Chief Medical Officer of the hospital Dr. Patrick Turay said the fire incident will gravely impact their operations in the months and years to come. He says the financial loss could run into millions of USD.
The Cameroonian born virologist Dr. Raul almost walked his way into the blazing building before he could be halted by some hospital staff and security personnel. He breakdown in tears as he witnessed his endeavor and research work on Ebola virus disease and other viruses been consumed by Fire with nothing to do to help the situation.
