*THE STATE OF GIRLS IN SIERRA LEONE

THE STATUS OF GIRLS IN SIERRA LEONE.

Among many other challenges, girls in Sierra Leone continue to suffer in Child Marriage, Forced Female Genital Mutilation, Lack of equal access to Education, Teenage pregnancy, Rape etc

Colossal efforts have been made and are still being made my INGOs, The Ministry of Gender and Children Affairs, The Ministry of Health and Sanitation, The Ministry of Education and The Commission for Children to combat these issues. However bad laws like the Customary Marriage Act , Illetracy and Absence of Strong Laws to punish perpetrators of crimes against girls like sexual harassment and Rape.
Sadly, inclusive in the group of perpetrators are the male teachers in schools. They force girls for sex in exchange for meagre sums and grades. The Anti Corruption Commission, MEST, FSU and MSWGCA must make these concerns priorities in their Action plans to give girls a favorable learning environment. Simply put, the conditions of our young girls is sadly sad. Potentials of thousands of young girls are undiscovered and untapped because of the factors listed above.

EMPHATICALLY THEREFORE, I WISH TO SUGGEST TO THE MDAs CONCERNED TO PROFER SOLUTIONS TO THESE PROBLEMS GIRLS FACE. EVEN IF IT MEANS HIRING A DEVELOPMENT FOR GIRLS CONSULTANT. LET GIRLS BE GIRLS NOT MOTHERS.

WHAT GIRL’S SHOULD KNOW?

Teenage girls need to accept that they are little children growing up not ‘bigwoman’ as some of them claim to be. Life is in stages. In Girlhood, girls are expected to focus on education and self development. Girls need to understand that their is life after BECE, after WASSCE and after College. Girls must not rush into womanhood activities. They must give themselves time to mature. Abstinence from sex and love relationship is vital if girls must achieve their dreams and consequently succeed.

Girls must focus on education. BOOK BEFORE BOYS BECAUSE BOYS BRING BABIES.

WHAT PARENTS MUST KNOW?

Most parents don’t realize that their girl child is their future. Girls need attention but parents only give affection. Parents must make time to talk to their girl child and improve on parent-child relationship. Parents must exercise discipline to ensure girls dress and behave appropriately. The home is the first teacher. Parents must teach their daughters about sex and life issues to give them a defence against the wrong teachings of bad influence. Your child is your future. Take her issue more seriously now than ever. Train up a child the way she should grow so when she is old she will not depart from it. This is a commandment from God.
Wishing all the girls in Sierra Leone, Africa and World Wide a Happy International Day of the Girl Child.
Think.   Dream .   choose.
Success is a choice.

What’s your choice?
